Continuing Education

Electrical Contractors must actively employ, in a full-time capacity, a Wyoming-licensed Master Electrician who will serve as the master of record. This individual will assume responsibility to ensure that the NEC, W.S. 35-9-120 through W.S. 35-9-130, and applicable rules of the department are adhered to on all electrical work undertaken by the electrical contractor in the State of Wyoming. A master of record can ONLY be a master of record for one (1) company.

All work shall be under the direction and supervision of a master electrician who is actively and solely employed by the contractor.

Every employee of an electrical contractor performing electrical work in the State of Wyoming will be required to be licensed as a master or journeyman electrician, hold a valid temporary work permit as a journeyman, or be registered as an apprentice electrician.

  • 8 years (16,000 hours) of work experience in the electrical wiring industry.
    • This work history must include evidence of experience in planning, laying out, and NEC and shall have been under the direct supervision of a qualifying electrician for a licensed electrical contractor.
    • Electrical work experience is to consist of electrical installation in residential, commercial, and industrial categories.
      • No more than 75% may be in any one category.
    • Up to 2 years (4,000 hours) credit may be given for study of electrically-related courses taken through an accredited school.
    • For electrical experience gained in the military to be considered, you must include a copy of your DD-214 with application.
    • A copy of a current electrical license from another state licensing board, which has work history requirements equal to or more stringent than the 8 years (16,000 hours) requirement of the State of Wyoming, may be acceptable as proof of work history.
      • If you hold a license in another state, and would like to verify if it is acceptable for proof of work history, please call our office.

Any master electrician performing electrical work in the State of Wyoming shall be employed at all times by an electrical contractor who carries a current Wyoming electrical contractor’s license.

  • 4 years (8,000 hours) of work experience in the electrical wiring industry
    • This work history must include evidence of experience in planning, laying out, and NEC and shall have been under the direct supervision of a qualifying electrician for a licensed electrical contractor.
    • Electrical work experience is to consist of electrical installation in residential, commercial, and industrial categories.
      • No more than 75% may be in any one category.
    • Up to 2 years (4,000 hours) credit may be given for study of electrically-related courses taken through an accredited school.
    • A copy of a current electrical license from another state licensing board, which has work history requirements equal to or more stringent than the 4 year (8,000 hour) requirement of the State of Wyoming, may be acceptable as proof of work history.
  • 576 hours of electrically-related classroom instruction.

Any Journeyman electrician performing electrical work in the State of Wyoming shall be employed at all times by an electrical contractor who carries a current Wyoming electrical contractor’s license.

Wyoming Electrical Contractor Licenses renew annually on July 1st.

Wyoming Master Electrician and Journeyman Electrician Licenses renew every three years on July 1st.

Wyoming Journeyman and Master Electrician will need to take 16 hours of continuing education within each three-year license period. At least 8 of the required 16 hours of training shall specifically cover the National Electrical Code.
